Continuous Condition Monitoring of Cable Systems

Greenlight is a Synaptec solution for early detection of damage and degradation in power cables, cable joints and terminations. The system continuously monitors electrical and temperature parameters of the cable circuit, helping identify developing abnormalities before they result in an outage.

Passive measurement points require no local power supply or active communications equipment. Signals are transmitted over standard single-mode optical fibre to centralized equipment.

What Greenlight Detects and Addresses

  • Local overheating of cable joints and terminations
  • Increased resistance of power connections
  • Faults in screen bonding and grounding connections
  • Abnormal screen currents
  • Parameter differences between phases
  • Sections limiting the permissible circuit load
  • Developing abnormalities between periodic inspections

The system helps identify a developing problem before it causes cable damage or an unplanned outage.

Key Benefits

Early Detection

Abnormalities are detected at an early stage of development.

Fault Localization

The affected section can be identified more accurately and quickly.

Maintenance Planning

Maintenance can be scheduled during a planned service window.

Reduced Outage Risk

The risk of unplanned outages is reduced.

Remote Section Monitoring

Monitoring without local power supplies or active field electronics.

Capacity Assessment

Elements limiting the circuit loading capacity can be identified.

What the System Monitors

Phase Currents

Monitoring the actual loading of the cable circuit.

Screen Currents

Detection of screen grounding and bonding abnormalities.

Joint Temperature

Detection of localized overheating at cable joints.

Termination Temperature

Monitoring of power connections and load limitations.

Cable Temperature Condition

Identification of hot sections and assessment of thermal loading.

How Greenlight Works

1

Measurement

Passive current and temperature sensors are installed on selected circuit elements.

2

Signal Transmission

Signals are transmitted over single-mode optical fibre.

3

Data Acquisition

The DES Interrogator receives and synchronizes the measurements.

4

Analysis

The Synthesis platform analyzes the data and identifies abnormalities.

5

Integration

Data and alerts are transmitted to the plant SCADA system.

Where Greenlight Is Used

  • Main substation incomers
  • Crusher and mill feeder circuits
  • Conveyor systems
  • Pumping and compressor stations
  • Converter substations
  • Cable tunnels and galleries
  • Remote cable sections
  • Underground and subsea cable circuits
  • Wind and solar power plant cable circuits
  • Circuits with difficult-to-access joints and terminations

Greenlight in the Plant Infrastructure

The solution can be applied to both new and existing cable circuits. System configuration is defined with consideration of cable construction, circuit length, number of joints, screen bonding arrangement, available fibre-optic infrastructure and the existing SCADA system.
